Portraits - Andrew Danson

In 1997 during the festival of Purim I photographed at the Chabad Lubavitch Shul in Toronto. (Purim is a festival of masks celebrating Jewish survival from Persian annihilation during the period after the destruction of the First Temple.) As I moved freely during prayer I could feel my own roots as a non-secular Jew. In 1998 I photographed in Lubavitch communities in Paris, London and Berlin.

I am deeply affected by the tribal conflict-ridden evolution of all semitic peoples, for 'once we were shepherds'.
