Portraits - Andrew Danson

In 1998 I decided to go to Havana in some attempt to photograph before rapid change began to alter the face of this historical and culturally rich city. During an initial 7 days in Havana I photographed in such a free manner as I had not experienced in the 20 years of my more controlled portrait work. I walked for 9 hours each day photographing 'what fell to my eye' in this city of very beautiful but decaying architecture. I decided to think less and respond more to the world around me with my camera.

Since 1998 I have returned on many occasions to continue this work. During 2000-01 I was invited to curate exchange exhibitions between Cuban and Canadian photographers in Havana and Toronto which brought me closer to the creative passions of Cuban life.
