The Toronto Portraits series began in 1976 when I began formally photographing people I met in the street, in restaurants, at concerts and in working situations. In those days one could meet people like that and ask to return to their living environments and most said yes. Of course I never knew about the 'living museums' I was about to enter. Some eighteen years later I found some of the same people and went back to revisit and re-photograph a few of them. Others had died, moved away or were not to be found. The experience of revisiting presented me and some of my subjects with a powerful sense of appreciation and gratitude about reunion, about life. All this through the image and the ritual surrounding the photograph. |
