Portraits - Andrew Danson

In 1983 I began arranging for politicians to photograph themselves alone in their offices. It took a year to organize my plan. As the project gathered momentum I was able to have the Prime Minister at the time, his major cabinet ministers, the Leader of the Opposition and the 10 Premiers of the Provinces photograph themselves. Some politicians saw humour in such an undertaking while others took themselves very seriously. This work is about power, self-image, imagination and about the dialectics of photography.

My Unofficial Portraits book, now out of print, was a Canadian best-seller. Some of the work is in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography and National Archives of Canada, Ottawa.
